General Recycling
Overview of the importance of recycling within the context of
solid waste management. Usually conducted in conjunction with a tour of Moscow
Recyclings facility. Explains the details of source separation, contamination,
processing, shipping and markets and reprocessing into new materials. Includes short
video.
Waste Reduction/Reuse
In-depth discussion of ways to reduce waste in both personal and
business settings. Explores issues such as excess packaging and disposable vs. durable
products. Includes videos and discussion of Buy Recycled and Shop Smart programs.
Backyard and Worm Composting
General discussion of composting of organic material through
simple backyard methods or with the aid of special worm bins. Emphasis placed on such
beginning topics as mixing of materials, aeration, basic worm physiology and how to work
bins. Includes videos and curriculum guides as well as examples of both bins.
Household Hazardous Waste
Examines complex array of household items that are generally considered hazardous
or toxic. Discusses how these materials negatively impact landfills and the environment
when thrown away, how they are handled, ways to divert them from the waste stream, and
alternative cleaning products. Includes short video.
Tours of the Moscow Recycling Center /Solid Waste Processing
Facility
Guided tours for community organizations and schools that discuss collection and
processing of recycled materials at the recycling center (401 N. Jackson) and solid waste
management at the Solid Waste Processing Facility (Highway 8). Long pants and closed toe
